“Something about glamour interested me. All my schoolbooks had drawings of women on terraces with a cocktail and a cigarette.” ~ Bill Blass
Bill Blass was born in Indiana to a traveling salesman father and a dressmaker mother. At an early age he started sketching elegant women and his love for design lead him to begin sewing gowns in his early teens. After selling his designs to various New York manufacturers he saved up enough money to move to the US fashion capital at 17. In 1945 he became an apprentice to Baron de Gunzburg. In 1959 he moved up to head designer of Maurice Rentner Ltd and renamed it Bill Blass. His simple, elegant style with an attention to tailoring took the brand to new heights. Blass won the Coty award seven times and was awarded the lifetime achievement award by the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1999.
