Brothers, Custo and David Dalmau, born in Barcelona, had a love for art at an early age. Custo studied architecture in college and after graduating the brothers took an overseas trip to visit the USA in the early 1980’s. Their taste for adventure lead them on a cross-country motorcycle trip with California as their final destination. The two were inspired most by “the golden coast” and credit the bright, beach lifestyle, and surf culture with influencing their debut 1981 line of colorful graphic T-shirts. The fun easy wearing designs took off with the media coining the phrase “Customania” after many actors and actresses started sporting their shirts and sales took off.
Their first full collection in 1997 expanded on their T-shirt collection including brightly colored dresses, skirts, and blouses. Their use of bright psychedelic prints were a much needed departure from the saturation of minimalism at the time. The full line received endorsements from Penelope Cruz, Julia Roberts, Christina Aguilera, and a coveted spot in Carrie’s wardrobe on “Sex and the City.”
