James Galanos’ designs are best categorized by their supreme workmanship. The attention to detail is truly unsurpassed in any other American ready to wear designer. Based in Los Angeles, Galanos got his start by interning in Paris and moving to New York to work as an assistant to several different design houses. He soon began creating original designs and his first line was picked up by Saks.
Galanos created garments more in the style of couture but with the wearability of ready to wear. His chiffon dresses were very popular in the 1950’s and featured meticulously hand-rolled edged and pleats. Throughout his career he gained popularity among high society women that appreciated his evening wear and suit design. He is most famous for dressing Nancy Reagan in some of his smartly tailored suits. His commitment to craftsmanship makes his vintage designs fit flawlessly into today’s trends.
