“It’s not just about wearing a dress. It’s about having an experience and making a statement.”-Naeem Khan Naeem Khan’s eponymous label is best known for its red carpet worthy gowns. Khan often uses handcrafted fabrics in his designs and has been praised for his ornate detailing. Khan was born and raised in Mumbai, India and he credits his grandfather Shamsuddin Khan with sparking his interest in fashion. Shamsuddin ran an embroidery business in the 1930’s where he designed lavish cloth for India’s royal families. His family encouraged his interest in fashion design and he moved to New York to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology but never graduated.
Khan and his father were set to sell some of their embroidered designs to Halston and the fashion house ended up hiring Khan as a design assistant after the meeting. He worked there for several years before starting his own line in 2003. Some of his best known clients include Beyonce, Leighton Meester, Brooke Shields, and Michelle Obama.
