Oscar de la Renta learned from masters and became one himself. Born in the Dominican Republic, he left at age 18 to study painting at the Academy of San Fernando. in Madrid. His interests turned away from fine arts and lead him into the world of fashion illustration. He began sketching designs and landed a position at Balenciaga, and later at Lanvin. Oscar moved to New York in 1963 to design at Elizabeth Arden and two years later got a head designer position at Jane Derby. De la Renta was named head designer and eventually changed the name of the company to Oscar de la Renta Ltd. in 1969.His style at his eponymous label can be described as decadent, romantic, extravagant, feminine, and intricate. Even his simpler daywear has extraordinary detail. He received the Coty award twice in his lifetime and the American Fashion Critic’s Award twice as well. From 1993 to 2003 De la Renta also served as head designer at Balmain.
