From the 1990s we have this African inspired dress from Jean Paul Gaultier. Probably around 1994 when he was taking a million different colors and countries and mixing them all up. This dress looks to have been inspired by African tribes women who wrap and tie themselves in swaths of colorful fabric. The dress is constructed in a simple color blocked column. The silk sashes are sewn into the side seams and thus can be wrapped and tied as you please. Bows in front? In back? Tied up around the neck into a halter? Or just trailing behind, a come hither?
Designer: JEAN PAUL GAULTIER.
